The INBRE project is designed to enhance the competitiveness of biomedical research in Nebraska by developing the human and technological resources essential for cutting edge research in functional genomics.

The foundation of the project is a collaboration between eight undergraduate institutions, two community colleges and the three Ph.D. granting institutions located throughout the State. This collaboration is intended to develop a culture that recognizes and appreciates the value of biomedical research and provide opportunities to pursue such research at the cutting edge of current technologies.

Evolution Conference at UNK

September 2-4, 2009

The unifying theme in the biological sciences, the one theory that makes sense of an otherwise disjointed set of facts in the discipline of Biology, is the theory of evolution.  Great strides in our understanding of evolution have taken place since your time here at UNK and we would like you to be part of some of these new and exciting developments.  We in the Biology Department are organizing a major symposium September 2-4, 2009 in celebration of two milestone anniversaries. The first is Charles Darwin’s 200th birthday, which was February 12th and the second is the 150th anniversary of the publication of his landmark work, On the Origin of Species, which will be official this November.

We are excited about the speakers participating and the topics of presentation.  Speakers include Jack Horner, world-renowned expert on dinosaurs, Shannon Williamson, part of the Decoding the Oceans Project, of the J. Craig Venter Institute, and Nick Matzke, formerly of the National Center for Science Education, and now a graduate student at the University of California at Berkeley, who prepared some of the testimony documents for the Plaintiffs in the Dover, PA Intelligent Design trial.   Several other speakers will be part of our venue as well. Please see www.evolution2009.org for a complete listing and further information.  REGISTRATION FOR THE CONFERENCE IS NOW FREE!!!  Unfortunately, space is limited for the conference to 300 attendees and the workshop to 40 participants, so it is important that you register for the conference by the August 15th deadline.  There will be poster sessions as well.

We hope that you can join us.
